Meet the Family Medicine Residency Faculty
Paul A. Rich, M.D.
Dr. Rich became the Director of the Family Medicine Residency Program in August of 2011. He is a native Ohioan, from Girard, Ohio - a suburb of Youngstown. He earned a Bachelor of Arts in Microbiology from Miami University of Ohio, and his M.D. from the Medical College of Ohio (Toledo) in 1995. In 1999, he completed his residency training at the Western Reserve Health Education Family Medicine Program and built a very successful private practice upon graduation.
In addition to his Program Director and Private Practice commitments, Dr. Rich holds an appointment with the American University of Antigua College of Medicine as Adjunct Professor for Clinical Medicine and Clinical Assistant Professor at Northeast Ohio Medical University in Rootstown, OH. Within our major affiliated medical center, he is a member of the Family Medicine Department Patient Care Committee and holds the position of the hospital's Chief Medical Officer. His professional memberships include the American Congress of Obstetricians and Gynecologists, American Association of Family Practitioners, American Medical Association, Ohio State Medical Association and the Society of Teachers of Family Medicine. His honors include the 2003 NEOMED Outstanding Teacher of the Year award and Chief Resident in his final year of residency.
Dr. Rich enjoys the full spectrum of Family Medicine with specific interests in obstetrics, benign gynecology, advanced lipid analysis and genetic testing for cardiovascular disease as well as various genetic cancer syndromes. He enjoys spending time with his four children, playing basketball, scuba diving and is a die-hard Notre Dame fan.
Steven Swain, M.D.
Dr. Swain received his B.S. degree in Combined Science from Youngstown State University. After graduating from Northeast Ohio Medical University in 2002, he spent three years in the Western Reserve Health Education Family Medicine Residency program, where he also served as Chief Resident in his final year of residency. Upon completion of residency, Dr. Swain remained in the Youngstown area in private practice. In April 2012, Dr. Swain became a full-time Faculty Member at WRHE. He currently serves as the Associate Program Director and Clerkship Director of the residency program. He also holds appointments as Clinical Assistant Professor of Family Medicine and Primary Ambulatory Care Experience Preceptor for NEOMED in Rootstown, Ohio. He is also a Clinical Assistant Professor of Family Medicine at Ross University College of Medicine and Adjunct Professor for Clinical Medicine at American University of Antigua College of Medicine. Dr. Swain’s passion for medicine is evident and goes well beyond the walls of the hospital. In January 2011, he started Hands of Hope: A Free Health Clinic in Warren, Ohio that serves the Youngstown/Warren communities. In addition, he has traveled on multiple missions trips to Haiti, Dominican Republic and Africa to help the underserved and serves as the Medical Director for Brown Horse Projects. Dr. Swain enjoys watching and playing basketball and roots for all Cleveland Sports as well as the Ohio State Buckeyes.
Szymon Krzyzanowski, M.D.
Dr. Krzyzanowski is originally from Chicago, IL and received his B.A. in Biology from Illinois Wesleyan University in 2003. He earned his Doctor of Medicine degree from Jagiellonian University in Krakow, Poland and completed a three-year Family Medicine Residency at Western Reserve Health Education and served as Chief Resident in his final year of residency.
Immediately following his residency graduation in 2011, he became a full-time Faculty Member at WRHE. Dr. Krzyzanowski enjoys the full spectrum of family medicine, with particular interests in pre-diabetic testing, advanced lipid testing and preventative health. He also has a great interest in obesity and weight loss management.
Dr. Krzyzanowski is currently the Medical Director at Caprice Nursing Home, where he sees patients for their acute rehabilition program and their long term nursing home care. His professional memberships include the American Academy of Family Physicians and The American Medical Association.
Dr. Krzyzanowski is a big fan of the Chicago Bears and Manchester United. His hobbies include aquariums and skiing.
Joseph Marzano, PhD
Dr. Marzano was born and raised in Youngstown, OH and has been a provider of mental health services to the residents of Youngstown and surrounding communities since 1994. He earned his B.A. in Psychology in 1992 from Bowling Green State University. Since 1995, he’s been licensed in the state of Ohio as a Licensed Professional Clinical Counselor, and completed his Doctoral degree in Clinical Psychology at Walden University in 2006.
In 1998, Dr. Marzano transitioned from working in the public mental health sector to working in the private sector. He established his private practice in 2003 and joined the faculty as the Director of Behavioral Sciences for the WRHE Family Medicine Residency in 2010.
Dr. Marzano has a passion for teaching others and this is evidenced in his role as internship site supervisor for Youngstown State University and Kent State University and serving as a student advisor in adolescent development with students in local school districts. He holds an appointment as Adjunct Professor with Argosy University teaching General Psychology and Interpersonal Effectiveness courses. His professional memberships include Counselor and Marriage and Family Therapist Board of Ohio, Mahoning County Psychotherapist Guild, Chi Sigma Iota-Professional Honors Society and he is the President of Advanced Counseling Solutions in Austintown, Ohio.
Professionally, Dr. Marzano has special interests in anxiety disorders and social and family dynamics. Personally, he enjoys any outdoor sports, hunting and fishing.
Daniel Miller, M.D.
Dr. Miller received his B.A. degree from the University of Pennsylvania in 1997. After finishing medical school, he completed a Family Medicine residency in 2009, and joined the WRHE Family Medicine Residency Faculty at that time. In addition, Dr. Miller has a private practice in Austintown, Ohio. His interest is in preventative health care. He holds an appointment at Northeast Ohio Medical University as Assistant Clinical Professor, and his professional memberships include the American Medical Association, Mahoning County Medical Society, American Academy of Family Physicians and the American Board of Family Medicine.
Ayan Sanyal, M.D., M.P.H.
Dr. Ayan Sanyal is originally from Rochester, NY. He completed his B.S. in Health Promotion at the University of Houston Honors College in Houston, TX. The next stop on his journey was St. George's University School of Medicine in Grenada, West Indies where he earned his Master of Public Health degree (Health Behavior and Policy track) and also his Doctor of Medicine degree.
Dr. Sanyal is a proud graduate of the Western Reserve Health Education Family Medicine Residency, where he served as Chief Resident in his final year. In 2015, he became a faculty member in Family Medicine with Obstetrics and an attending physician at a nearby private practice. He has a passion for Pediatrics, Obstetrics and Psychiatry.
Outside of work, he enjoys cooking and spending time with friends, family and his rescue dog Gadget. He is a proud godfather to his godchildren Ethan and Alivia. Dr. Sanyal is also an enthusiastic aquarist.
Roman Davidenko, M.D.
Dr. Davidenko earned his BS in Biology in 2007 from the University of Akron and his MD from Northeastern Ohio Universities College of Medicine (now known as Northeast Ohio University) in 2011. He completed his residency at Western Reserve Health Education in June 2014 and immediately joined the faculty in the Family Medicine Program. He enjoys singing, snowboarding, jet-skiing, rock climbing and volleyball.
Apurva Padubidri, M.D.
Dr. Apurva Padubidri is from Canfield- a suburb of Youngstown, OH. She earned her B.S. from Kent State University and her Doctor of Medicine degree from St. Matthew's University School of Medicine in Grand Cayman. She is also a graduate of the Western Reserve Health Education Family Medicine Residency Program, serving as Chief Resident in her final year graduating in 2017.
Dr Padubidri began as a full-time faculty member with Western Reserve Health Education in August 2017 and is a member of Steward Medical Group. Dr. Padubidri has interest in full spectrum family medicine, but is particularly passionate about preventative medicine, nutrition, fitness, women's health and adolescent medicine. She loves spending time with her husband Mark, her family, friends and dog Lando. She also enjoys traveling, reading, fitness and Cleveland sports.
