Surgery Residency Program

The mission of the Western Reserve Health Education’s (WRHE) General Surgery Residency Program is to foster the continuation of scientific and clinical experiences that support the educational, administrative, and professional needs of the surgical trainee while maintaining the commitment to excellence, innovation, and leadership in preparing young surgeons for a career in medicine.

Our program is designed to provide comprehensive training for those wishing to pursue a career in primary general surgery or for those who are applying for post-graduate specialized surgical fellowships.

We offer an in-depth and diverse surgical experience. Surgical residents are offered the opportunity to participate in all operative procedures including surgical subspecialties such as head and neck, burns, oncology, cardiothoracic and peripheral vascular, colorectal, surgical endoscopy, plastic and reconstructive, urology, pediatric and transplant.

Our fully-accredited teaching program provides core general surgery and subspecialty experience to third and fourth year medical students.

The WRHE faculty is a well-trained, motivated academic group who are dedicated to surgical education. The Department of Surgery has a faculty of more than 75 surgeons and 27 gynecologists who participate in resident teaching. Our staff of almost 175 primary care physicians complements the subspecialties.

Over 15,000 surgical procedures are performed annually at our clinical affiliates. General surgery residents at WRHE are given the opportunity to perform a wide variety of surgical procedures under the supervision of active staff surgeons at Trumbull Regional Medical Center and our affiliated clinical sites.

Director's Message

Thank you for your interest in the General Surgery Residency Program at Western Reserve Health Education (WRHE) in Warren, Ohio.  I am privileged to direct this outstanding program and invite you to consider joining us.  We are a program that fosters the continuation of scientific and clinical experiences that supports the educational, administrative, and professional needs of the surgical trainee while maintaining the commitment to excellence, innovation, and leadership in preparing young surgeons for a career in surgical medicine.

From the time our residents step foot into this program they become indispensable members of our surgery department.  Our program is a five-year fully-accredited program designed to provide comprehensive training for those wishing to pursue a career in primary general surgery or for those who are applying for post-graduate specialized surgical fellowships. We train our resident to be extensively involved in the teaching program which provides core general surgery and subspecialty elective experience to third and fourth year medical students.

The board-certified faculty is a well-trained, motivated, academic group who are dedicated to surgical education. Over the last six years, 100 percent of our surgery graduates passed Part 1 of the board exam on the first attempt 90 percent passed part two on the first attempt.

Our general surgery residents at WRHE are given an opportunity to perform a wide variety of surgical procedures under the supervision of active staff surgeons at Trumbull Regional Medical Center and our affiliated sites.  Upon completion, our residents will have performed approximately 1,000 operations in state-of-the-art surgical suites. We have 10 categorical and three preliminary residents enrolled in our program each year.
